Potomac River Fishing Report - 1 December 2009

We braced the cold morning air today to go after those beautiful green fish with the vivid black stripe that live in the mighty Potomac River. Yes the bass are still biting in the Potomac River even after a strong cold front left the air temperature at 30 degrees this morning. With the brisk 10 knot morning wind the wind chill factor was easily in the mid twenties as moisture quickly froze to the boat and carpet as we launched the Blue and Silver Ranger Z21. Incredible as it seemed as we launched the boat there were bass chasing baitfish right at the ramp. Armed with at least 10 different rods rigged with a variety of baits we began fishing in the 49 degree water. It was not long before a chunky bass grabbed a white Hawg Caller spinnerbait and a big smile paused for a picture. Today we caught around 17 bass in about 6 hours of fishing. All the bass were caught in isolated sections of the grass and around wood. To catch the bass now you need to fish slowly (move trolling motor down at a slow speed and keep your bait moving slowly when near the grass and wood). Reeling slowly and stopping the retrieve was a good way to get a reaction bite today. The best bait today was a spinnerbait. We also caught bass on a Pointer 100 jerkbait and senkos.

If you want to go out for a fun time to catch Potomac cold water bass I am scheduling guide trips in December 2009. It's a great way to get rid of that cabin fever that starts building up this time of year. I wish you a Merry Christmas with plenty of God's blessings and fishing tackle and a New Year filled with big bass.
