Potomac River Fishing Report - 25 March 2012

Fishing on the Potomac is outstanding right now as we experience one of the fastest warm-ups ever in March. The water temperature has moved into the 70’s in many areas of the river. This past week we caught some beautiful bass on 1/4 oz. Sugar Shads in a Gold chrome color with a black back. Some of the bass ate the bait so well that they actually had it in the back of their throats. We were careful to make sure that all bass were released unharmed. You can catch many smaller male bass up near the banks and if you are willing to back off a little bit you will find the staging females are ready to give your rod a big pull. We had one bass so big on a Friday guide trip that after taking us around the boat once it actually pulled the knot out of the line and swam away with the hook. I will definitely go back and try to catch that big one. Slower moving plastics are taking the bigger female bass and you will need to fish this slowly near the grass and drops close to hard cover. On two of my guide trips last week both Dale Boman and Dan Toran caught big numbers of beautiful bass up to 4 lbs. With the cooler weather coming in starting 26 March ( I guess March is going out like a lion after coming in like a lamb) it will probably slow down the bite to some degree. It is supposed to get into the 20’s Monday night and will gradually warm-up as we move later into the week. Be careful as the winds will be strong this week and do your best to launch close to your fishing areas. Avoid situations of long runs where the wind is opposite the tide, this creates dangerous boating conditions on the Potomac. Hope to see you on the water and give me a call if you would like a thrilling day of fishing on the Potomac River.
