Potomac River Fishing Report - 1 August 2009

The Potomac River bass are moving into their summer pattern and are becoming a challenge to locate as they tend to bunch up in certain areas of the river. The great news is once you find them you can normally depend on the bass staying close to these areas until the cool weather comes back in the fall. The best way to locate the bass now is to be trolling motor down and fish along areas that are holding good populations of baitfish. The bass are biting during certain stretches of high tide and also on the latter part of a falling tide. If you think you are in a good area be patient and examine both the high and low tide bites. Last saturday (25 July) we caught some nice bass on the main river grassbeds using a variety of plastics on an incoming tide (flood tide). The key is to fish slowly. Most bass were picking up the bait and moving away with it. Many times you will see your line moving before you feel the bite. All bass we caught were a beautiful bright green with a vivid stripe down their side. They appeared to be very healthy . We are catching many small bass and this is a good indicator that the future Potomac populations are doing well. The best times to fish now are during the early morning hours to avoid the heat and afternoon thunderstorms.
