The bass are biting and starting to feed up with the cool temperatures that have entered our area over the past few days. Look for the greenest grass and you will find the bass. We caught several really fat healthy Potomac River bass the past few days in shallow grass beds. Many of these bass were between 4-5 lbs. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and a variety of plastic baits are working well. Look for the bright green grass beds that have a mix of both hydrilla andf milfoil. You also need to have schools of baitfish that are swimming around these grassy areas. There bass are biting very aggressively on the last couple hours of the outgoing tide (ebb tide) and the first couple of hours of the incoming tide (flood tide). Most of the bass are positioning themselves behind a clump of grass and ambushing the bait as it moves by their hideout. The strike range of the bass appears to be wide right now. They will move several feet to chase down your lures. When you are in cloudy water remember to slow down your spinnerbait and chatterbait presentations. Sometimes when you stop reeling for an instant the bass will smash your lure. The water temperature in the river now is between 78-79 degrees and should be dropping even lower over the next week with the cool nights. There is plenty of outstanding September bass fishing action to be found on the Potomac. The next several days are perfect for Potomac river bass fishing. It is a great time to go out and catch some big Potomac River bass.
